Aderant today (15 December) announced a strategic partnership with legal GenAI platform Harvey, with Harvey integrating directly with Aderant to bridge the practice and business of law. It is anticipated that the integration will help to inform and improve the likes of time and billing inputs and outputs with real time access to information, as Aderant anticipates what the future of legal work looks like.

Speaking to Legal IT Insider, CEO and president Chris Cartrett said: “We’re trying to look at what the future of legal really looks like and for us, this is about connecting attorney workflows and how they work with everything in those financial and operating systems.

“The way we view this is as a unified lifecycle from client, case and matter, ensuring that what the lawyer’s working on aligns directly with the financial and practice data. So think of it as truly end-to-end. And so, whereas today people are leveraging AI for enhanced drafting or research or they’re doing their document workflows, imagine all that stuff seamlessly integrating into your time and billing. We’re excited about this and I think it really can have an enormous impact for our customers.”

When it comes specifically to time and billing, Cartrett says the integration will mean more accurate real time data, commenting: “To put it in just real Aderant terms for our clients, it’s richer narratives, it’s more accurate billing that leads to fewer write downs.”

He adds: “What you’re really doing here is integrating the two core systems where the work happens and then where that information’s managed and monetized. So that’s the goal – how do you start to bring those things together to really radically change the user experience that lawyers have had throughout their careers.”

Aderant and Harvey have been talking for some months and Cartrett says: “We’ve made progress in the mapping. It’s more now about the actual work. So for example, integration of data, like matter data, client data, we provide that to any AI tool that that’s just who we are. We would do that with anybody. This is more about, ‘Hey, is there an even greater opportunity?’ And that’s what we’re starting to work on.”

While point-to-point integrations are common in legal technology, Aderant and Harvey say they are the first to offer a deeply connected AI-to-business-of-law workflow that spans the full lifecycle of legal work — from initial drafting to time entry, matter context, billing insights, and profitability management.

“The future of legal technology is about making existing systems work together intelligently,” said Winston Weinberg, CEO of Harvey in a statement. “By integrating directly with Aderant, we’re bridging the gap between how lawyers practice law and how firms run their business — something no one else in the industry has achieved.”
