Google is funding a number of law firm ChromeOS pilots via reseller Appurity – a long-term Google partner that is taking part in Google’s Jump Start partner funding program. The program gives resellers the opportunity to claim funding for helping professional services organisations to deploy ChromeOS across part of or their entire organisation.

While law firms are almost invariably Microsoft Windows customers, Appurity is helping around 15 law firms with funded proof of values looking at ChromeOS and their desktop infrastructure and strategy. Appurity says that by combining ChromeOS devices with Microsoft E1 licensing, organisations can dramatically reduce their endpoint costs.

Most firms have now completed their Windows 11 migrations and standardised on compliant hardware. That transition, though largely finished, has prompted a wider rethink about how devices are managed over time.

Speaking to Legal IT Insider, Appurity director Steve Whiter said: “Your front of house workers don’t need a full-blown laptop with expensive E5 licensing. They just need a cheaper, browser-based solution that allows you E1 licensing.

We’re seeing IT teams reserving the full Microsoft stack and heavier infrastructure for roles that genuinely need it while equipping support staff, contractors and temporary fee-earners with secure, centrally governed Chrome devices.”

He adds: “We’re saying bring back your Windows 10 laptops and we’ll reuse those with Chrome. There’s your business continuity, you’re not just binning the laptops, you’re reusing them for a proper purpose.”

There is an environmental appeal to this and Whiter says: “Budgets are very strained at the moment and security budgets are strained but we’re finding you can go to a more cost effective model and reduce the costs from a licencing perspective because they wouldn’t need AV, they wouldn’t need any ransomware tools on these laptops.”
