If you missed our recent webinar with GenAI platform Jylo, make sure you catch the replay, which offers some of the clearest insights yet into how frontier AI models are reshaping legal work – and the risks that most firms still underestimate.
Legal IT Insider’s editor Caroline Hill chatted with Jylo’s founder and CEO Shawn Curran about the existential dangers of law firms sharing their IP with frontier AI models. What should they be doing differently – and is the toothpaste already out of the tube?
We examine the growing trend of law firms building their own AI tools and whether that is wise or sustainable, particularly given the risk of developing ‘Frankenstein’ tech stacks that quickly become obsolete. However we also discuss the rise of legal quants and vibe coding, which help legal specialists translate their knowledge into useful products and tools.
Another major theme is whether law firms or in‑house teams are best-placed to capitalise on AI advances. Corporate teams may be considering bringing more work in-house, but what does that mean in terms of them accessing law firm expertise and IP? Data flows need to be carefully controlled.
In this webinar, Hill and Curran unpack how new frontier AI model releases, such as the Anthropic Claude legal plug-in, have triggered market shocks across the legal tech sector. While publishers retain strong moats around legislation and regulated content, areas like contracts and precedents are increasingly exposed as models learn to generate high‑quality material based on previously ingested data. This has led investors and vendors alike to reassess defensibility in the face of fast‑moving AI capabilities.
The session closes with practical guidance for law firms navigating the AI era. Curran emphasises the importance of choosing vendors who do not compete for their data, focusing on productising expertise through legal engineering, and maintaining constant vigilance over data flows. It is not too late, but firms need to be clear on their value and strategy, and the risks and opportunities that AI presents.
