LTC4, the global not-for-profit legal technology training company that provides certification for technology proficiency, has today (30 March) launched a new competency for AI training.
‘Working with AI’ has been developed in collaboration with the organization’s global network. Three groups of technology training and adoption specialists, lawyers and IT professionals – all with AI implementation experience in their own firms – have created and peer-reviewed a set of training guidelines that can lead to the certification of competence.
Speaking to Legal IT Insider about the new release, Robert Karwic, head of user experience at Milbank and a founding and board member of LTC4 said: “Our newly released AI competency is ‘working with AI’ and I’m going to keep emphasising that its a ‘working with AI’ core competency, because it is very specific to ‘how do firms use AI and what skills do they need in order to be able to do that effectively?’
“Every firm has different tools. So this continues LTC4’s proud tradition of being agnostic. So whether you have Harvey or CoCounsel or Legora, these principles, which is what the core competencies always are, will provide you with essentially a roadmap on to how to train on or what to learn in order to be able to effectively work with AI at your firm.”
The competency includes:
• Understanding the capabilities and limitations of approved AI systems
• Applying AI to enhance workflows, research, drafting, and analysis
• Exercising human oversight, verification, and accountability
• Recognizing ethical, confidentiality, and risk considerations
• Continuously developing AI literacy as technology evolves
Law firms are under more pressure than ever from clients for their staff to understand how to use technology and leverage it effectively.
Karwic told us: “That’s where LTC4 got its roots. It was, ‘how do I prove technology competency?’ Well, we’ve got this group of people across the industry from different firms and with different perspectives who have agreed that these are the things that people need to be able to do. We have a set of volunteers who will assess a firm’s training programme and look at the test results for the assessments to see if they’ve demonstrated competency.”
While competency is normally updated and tested every two years, the new AI module will be updated annually for the time being. Karwic said: “We’re very excited about this, it’s a big, big release.”
