Harvey has made its first acquisition since being founded in 2022, with co-founder and CEO Winston Weinberg observing to Legal IT Insider that the San Francisco-headquartered company is open to more intentional acquisitions.
The acquisition announced last week is Hexus, the Pear VC and Liquid 2-backed AI product demo company founded by CEO Sakshi Pratap. The Hexus team, composed of former Google and X/Twitter engineers including Kunal Baweja (former X and Reddit engineer), will help to accelerate Harvey’s work supporting in-house legal teams. They will join Harvey’s San Francisco office but build for customers globally.
Speaking to Legal IT Insider, Harvey’s chief operating officer Katie Burke said that Harvey is hiring many engineers globally, including in San Francisco and India, where it opened an office in Bengaluru last year. Burke said: “We are looking at opportunities around product tuck-ins and also talent tuck-ins, to accelerate our product roadmap.” The Hexus team has experience in the consumer enterprise space and Burke said: “They focus on the daily tools that we use in our personal lives, and we want more of that in our enterprise technology and in our DNA. There’s is a real opportunity to accelerate our roadmap and build talent in San Francisco and India.”
It’s interesting that the focus for Pratap and her team will be the in-house legal market. Burke observed: “They are great engineers and they will eventually work on other elements of the business too, but given the acceleration within the in-house sector, having senior talent who enjoys solving for that problem is unique. We’re lucky to have their expertise.”
While Hexus is a very small company it has received a huge amount of interest due to it being the first acquisition by Harvey. It appears, however, that it won’t be the last. CEO Winston Weinberg told Legal IT Insider: “This acquisition is an early indicator that we are open to more intentional acquisitions for the right talent and opportunity.”
