Implementing new technology in a law firm is rarely easy. Implementing generative AI, at speed, in a mid-sized firm with busy fee earners, is harder still. In the latest episode of Talking Tech with Legal IT Insider, our editor Caroline Hill spoke with Claire Cooper, transformation lead and solicitor at Acuity Law, about the firm’s enterprise-wide implementation of Thomson Reuters’ CoCounsel — and, crucially, what worked well in making this new technology stick.

This is the first of two podcasts, focused on the current state of play at Acuity and the firm’s broader innovation approach. Acuity has been consistently ahead of the curve with CoCounsel, leading that journey at a time when many firms were still cautiously observing from the sidelines.

What challenges have Acuity faced in rolling out CoCounsel and how have they overcome them?

Many factors at play made a traditional, linear rollout unrealistic. Instead, the team adopted an agile, build-as-you-go approach — not because it was fashionable, but because it was necessary.

Litigation teams were the first users, partly because early versions of CoCounsel aligned more naturally with litigation use cases, and partly because those teams were more accessible and open to experimentation. From there, Acuity expanded to other litigation groups before moving into real estate, where higher-volume work lent itself to an AI solution.

We discuss the multi-prong methods that Acuity has used to drive adoption and also consistency, allowing teams to build capability over time.

CoCounsel is now rolled out to all full-time fee earners at Acuity. In the second podcast, we’ll explore ROI and value in more detail. For now, Acuity’s experience is a timely reminder that successful AI adoption is about technology, process, and people.
